In short

Candidate screening in ATS Pal is resume screening against the requirements of one job. It reads the job description, turns it into a list of requirements you can edit, scores every resume against each requirement, and ranks the candidates. Each score opens to the lines of the resume behind it, so a person can check it and decide.

How it works

From a job description to a ranked list.

Three steps, and you approve the first before any resume is scored.

  1. The job becomes a list of requirements

ATS Pal reads the job description and lists what it asks for. You edit the list and give each requirement a level: Mandatory, Required or Nice to have.

    • You confirm the list before scoring starts
    • A Mandatory requirement decides who is flagged
  2. Each resume is scored on every requirement

For each requirement the result is Met, Partial or Not shown, with the lines of the resume that support it. The score is built from these results.

    • Up to 200 resumes per role on Launch, 500 on Scale
    • Resumes in any language
  3. You get a ranked list you can check

Candidates are ordered by score. Those who meet every Mandatory requirement carry the Pal Approved mark, and one who misses a Mandatory requirement is marked Knockout with the reason.

This is what stands behind a score: the third candidate of the list above, opened.

Sara Lindqvist Payroll Specialist Pal Approved Score 74
Requirement Level Result Evidence from the resume
Payroll software: ADP or Dayforce Mandatory Met Ran biweekly payroll for 420 employees in Dayforce, 2021 to 2024.
Three or more years in payroll Mandatory Met Payroll roles at two employers, 2019 to 2024.
Year-end reporting Required Met Prepared and filed year-end slips for 2022 and 2023.
Month-end close Required Partial Says she supported month-end close. Her own part is not described.
French, spoken Required Not shown French is not mentioned in the resume.
Payroll certification Nice to have Not shown No certification is listed.

To confirm at the interview

  • Month-end close: what was her own part?
  • French: can she take a call from an employee in French?
  1. The score sums up the results below it. Here both Mandatory requirements are met and two Required ones are not fully shown, which puts it between 60 and 74.
  2. Each result points to what the resume says. If the resume does not say it, the result is Not shown, not a guess.
  3. What is Partial or Not shown on a requirement that matters becomes a point to confirm at the interview.

Scope

What it does, and where it stops.

It does

  • Reads the job description and proposes the requirements, for you to edit.
  • Scores every resume on every requirement, with the evidence.
  • Ranks the candidates, and marks Pal Approved and Knockout.
  • Runs the same analysis on resumes you already hold, for a new job.

It does not

  • Make the hiring decision. A person on your team decides.
  • Contact or reject candidates.
  • Search your database. It reads the resumes you give it.
  • Use your resumes to train any model.

Questions people ask

Does ATS Pal decide who gets hired?

No. It ranks and explains. A person on your team reads the reasons and decides who moves forward, and nothing is sent to a candidate.

How is the score worked out?

Each requirement counts by its level: Mandatory most, Required less, Nice to have least. The score follows which requirements are met and how strong the evidence is. As a guide: 90 and above means every Mandatory requirement is met with strong evidence and most Required ones too; 75 to 89, every Mandatory requirement is met and some Required ones are not; 60 to 74, the Mandatory ones are met but the gaps are notable or the evidence is thin; below 40, a Mandatory requirement is missing.

Is this keyword matching?

No. Each requirement is judged on what the resume says the person did, which is why every result comes with the lines it is based on. A resume that repeats a word without describing the work does not get the result.

How do I know the ranking can be trusted?

In our benchmarks the rankings agreed with the choices of experienced recruiters and hiring managers 94.7% of the time. The direct test is your own: run it on resumes you have already screened and compare.

Which languages can the resumes be in?

Resumes are read in any language.

Can I run a new job on resumes I already have?

Yes. Upload resumes you already hold for a new job and they are scored against that job like any others. ATS Pal does not connect to your database and search it; it reads the resumes you give it.

Do I need to replace my ATS?

No. ATS Pal works next to the ATS you use. You bring the job description and the resumes, and take the ranked list back.
